Hugs are an important part of close social relationships and, according to current research, can contribute positively to mental and physical health. The research interest in the scientific exploration of hugging has greatly increased in various disciplines in recent years. The aim of the essentials is to present these various research branches and unite them in a multidisciplinary perspective. In addition to the basics of hug research, the role of hugging in social relationships and its effects on stress as well as on mental and physical health are highlighted. The evolution of hugging and its research in the animal kingdom are also explained. Other focal points are the role of culture and gender in the context of hugs. The essential is rounded off with a look at the future of hug research.
