Zur Darstellung von Figuren jenseits binärer Geschlechterzugehörigkeit im Bilderbuch

This essay provides a comprehensive exploration of non-binary gender representation in picture books, offering insights into historical contexts, literary precursors, analytical frameworks, and case studies. It begins with a historical overview, elucidating how binary gender norms were established through societal regulatory practices. Subsequently, it surveys precursor characters in children’s and young adult literature, where gender roles are not distinctly defined. The analysis section scrutinizes a corpus of texts grounded in varied understandings of gender: from binary gender norms and their deviations (often pathologized), to triadic gender concepts and gender permeability. Two illustrative analyses of the picture books “Julian ist eine Meerjungfrau” (Love, 2020) and “Kivi und der Monsterhund” (Lundqvist & Johansson, 2012) are provided, shedding light on diverse narratological dimensions and the opportunities and challenges inherent in literary representations beyond binary genders. By examining historical precedents, contemporary narratives, and specific case studies, we gain insight into the complexities of representing gender diversity in literature aimed at young readers.
