IT for Networking and Communication in Automation

This chapter discusses the networking capabilities of information technology for automation systems. It makes a distinction between “small-scale” local networks and “large-scale” networks based on the Internet of Things (IoT). After assessing and analyzing the requirements, we examine the key technologies for IT networking in automation technology for systems and subsystems. Due to the wide range of implementation options, the question arises as to which technologies are essential for this purpose. This chapter provides an overview of the various methods of networking and communication and their application areas in each case.
