The question of whether language abilities are innate or learned is controversial. The theory of Universal Grammar suggests that every human has innate linguistic abilities that enable them to learn to speak. In contrast, usage-based approaches in Cognitive Linguistics assume a close connection between language structure and language use. These theories emphasize the importance of a child’s experience with language and reject the idea of innate language knowledge. An important concept is construction learning, where children acquire so-called constructions. These are form-meaning pairs that are composed of various linguistic elements from simple to complex structures such as words, phrases, or entire sentences. In the cortex, language processing primarily occurs in regions of the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes of the left hemisphere. The Broca area is responsible for language production, the Wernicke area for language comprehension. Language acquisition depends on various cognitive and neural mechanisms and is tied to critical developmental phases. The Poeppel model suggests that the early stages of language processing occur in the auditory areas. Similar to the visual system, there is a ventral “what” pathway and a dorsal “how” pathway in language processing. The ventral pathway is responsible for assigning sounds to meanings, while the dorsal pathway maps sounds onto motor-articulatory representations. The thalamus, basal ganglia, and cerebellum also play a crucial role in language perception and production, with the thalamus preprocessing auditory input, the basal ganglia involved in motor planning and grammar formation, and the cerebellum responsible for the coordination and timing of speech movements and the learning of new languages.
