The discussion about conscious machines is a complex and controversial field that raises both technical and philosophical questions. Despite the impressive achievements of AI systems like ChatGPT or GPT-4, many experts remain skeptical about whether these systems can attain consciousness. The claim by former Google engineer Blake Lemoine that some of these systems might already be conscious is rejected by many scientists. The Turing Test, a method for measuring a machine’s intelligence, has also come under criticism. It is argued that passing the Turing Test does not necessarily indicate genuine intelligence, but only the ability to mimic human behavior. John Searle’s thought experiment “The Chinese Room” poses another challenge to the concept of machine intelligence. Searle argues that a computer, even if it is capable of providing human-like responses, does not truly understand the meaning behind the words. The grounding problem raises the question of how the symbols and concepts used by AI systems can gain meaning from the real world. A possible solution could be embodied cognition, where AI systems could develop an understanding of the meaning of the symbols they process through interaction with the real world via sensors and actuators.
