AI as a Tool in Brain Research

  • Patrick Krauss

摘要

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significant implications for brain research. It enables the efficient analysis of large amounts of data from imaging techniques such as fMRI and EEG. An important application area is the automatic classification of sleep stages, which are essential for understanding learning and memory processes. AI can also be used in language processing research to analyze complex narrative stimuli. In studies, it was even possible to reconstruct linguistic content from neural activities, which is relevant for future brain-computer interfaces. Furthermore, so-called Inception Loops allow the search for sensory stimuli that optimally activate certain neurons. This understanding could be fundamental for the exploration of information processing in the brain. The diverse applications of AI in brain research could lead to significant advances in our understanding of the brain and its functions. This, in turn, enables the development of advanced brain-computer interfaces. Inception Loops could theoretically enable an ultimate virtual reality, however, they raise important ethical and philosophical questions due to the associated risks and challenges.
