Statistics deals with data, and data consists of numbers. That is what most people associate with statistics. However, with the IT revolution, further, quite different things have come into the focus of statistics as a science, including texts. Even though these have been generated in large quantities from a wide variety of sources for many centuries, they have become widely available with the increasing digitization of texts only recently and can nowadays be accessed as parts of large text collections. This has made it possible to analyze the information contained in text data in a structured and automated way. To this end, statistics provides many helpful methods, both for processing the data and for interpreting it.
