Flood Statistics: Still on the River Bank or Already in the Water?

Floods cause enormous damage. Despite decades of research, they still surprise us in their impact, and a better understanding of their underlying causes and processes would be of huge humanitarian and monetary importance. Statistics provides models and methods for analyzing the risk of floods and, more generally, extreme natural events. In the present chapter, we report on the state of research, ongoing developments, and open problems in the field of research on severe weather conditions.
