The Statistics of the German 6/49 Lotto

There is considerable evidence that positive returns from the lotto are possible in the long run. To many of us this seems paradoxical, since about 50% of revenues are retained by the state-owned lotto monopolies. But the other half is open to competition among players, where the smart ones may exploit the rest. Here we show how this works.
