Love with a Salty Taste: Carol (GB, US 2015)

The film Carol tells a love story with all its complexity in poetic and exquisite pictures. On the one hand, Carol is a wealthy, married woman and mother of a little girl, and on the other hand, she finds herself in a divorce and at the same time begins a love affair with a woman. Her husband wins the custody battle, and Carol effectively loses her child or pays the high ‘price of salt’! as Patricia Highsmith calls her 1952 novel on which the film’s screenplay is based. The article focusses on three female characters—a child, a young woman and an elder woman, connected in the story but in fact representing different stages in a female lifespan.
