Aid Provision

Patients with severe hand malformations should regularly undergo age-appropriate comprehensive functional analysis and receive advice on assistive devices. Various assessments can be used for this purpose. A rough distinction is made between assistive devices and adaptations. Both are intended to promote or support the child’s ability to act. This is particularly necessary when pain and/or rapid signs of fatigue occur. Chapter 7 lists some aids for various activities such as personal hygiene, eating and drinking, and mobility. For children with dysmelia, prefabricated aids often cannot be used. To manufacture custom adaptations or assistive devices, collaboration with a medical supply store is necessary.
