The Scar

The scar is a collagenous, fibrous, cell-poor, and vessel-poor connective tissue. This collagenous connective tissue is less elastic than the connective tissue of healthy skin. If it extends into deeper tissue layers, adhesions can form between tissue layers such as tendons, capsules, and ligaments. Wound healing is very good in the first year of life and hormonally deteriorates during puberty. After explaining the individual maturation phases, chapter 6 discusses scar treatment during the various phases. This is followed by an explanation of complications such as keloids or scar contractures. Finally, aids for scar treatment are introduced. Throughout the chapter, special care options for children with hand malformations are discussed.
