摘要
This work covers two subfamilies (Hemerodromiinae and Clinocerinae) of the Diptera family Empididae which have aquatic immature stages. The third subfamily (Empidinae) is terrestrial and not treated here. A synopsis of included genera is provided for Hemerodromiinae and Clinocerinae. Their morphology is discussed and understanding of their phylogeny, biogeography and fossil record is evaluated. Current knowledge of their biology and ecology is summarised.
