Screening for Resistance to Striga Hermonthica in Mutagenized Sorghum and Upland Rice in Burkina Faso

Striga hermonthica is a major production constraint to sorghum and upland rice in Burkina Faso due to poorly structured and nutrient deficient soils, unreliable rainfall and high temperatures that limit the cropping season. A mutation breeding project using gamma rays as the mutagen was undertaken to improve Striga resistance in these two cereal crops in farmer preferred varieties adapted to the unique challenges of Burkinabe agriculture. This chapter describes the screening protocols used to select sorghum and upland rice mutants with improved productivity over unmutagenized lines.
