Inflammation is often seen in response to bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, parasites, physical stress or damage, or chemical damage. Inappropriate or dysregulated inflammation can itself be a disease state. Depending on the type of inflammation, pathophysiological and cellular changes may differ significantly. This chapter will present common, representative diseases that involve an inflammatory response.
