Die Akzeptanz von Spiritual Care im Sozial- und Gesundheitswesen trifft auf die Neujustierung konfessioneller Seelsorge der katholischen Kirche. Mitten in der Transformation von Kirche und ihrer Pastoral wird von ihr Spiritualität als anthropologisches Grundaxiom und Ausdruck der Autonomie jedes Menschen im Sinne der Selbstsorge und so als ursprüngliche Grundlage kirchlicher Seelsorge wiederentdeckt. Auf dieser Basis wird ein neues Verhältnis von Seelsorge, Spiritualität und Medizin im Raum von Spiritual Care möglich. Seelsorge und Spiritual Care erfahren sich als ergänzende Systeme der Begleitung. Im interdisziplinären Zusammenspiel der Berufe des Gesundheitswesens eröffnen sie Menschen in existenziellen Erfahrungen ein ihnen gemäßes Angebot zur Bearbeitung von Krankheit, Sterben, Tod, Trauer und schicksalhaftem Erleben.
