Fad Diets and Commercial Programs

摘要

Nutritional therapy for obesity aims to achieve weight loss. The goal is to ensure that energy intake (calorie intake) is lower than energy expenditure. Diet is a central component of obesity therapy. The so-called weight loss diet, with the aim of achieving a negative energy balance, should only be applied for a limited time according to the recommendations of professional societies. For sustainable obesity treatment, a permanent change in diet and lifestyle is necessary. The composition of a weight loss diet in terms of the main nutrients fat, carbohydrates, and protein is of secondary importance. It is not crucial whether a “low-fat” or “low-carb” diet or a protein-focused diet is chosen for weight loss: ultimately, the achieved energy deficit (recommendation 300–500 kcal/day depending on the extent of overweight) counts. Much more important is that the diet suits the person. People who want to lose weight should no longer be forced into strict schemes. Fad diets are generally discouraged.
