Obesity and Binge Eating Disorder

A subgroup of patients with obesity also have an eating disorder, the so-called “binge eating disorder” (BED). In this case, on average at least once a week, there are binge eating episodes in which—accompanied by a feeling of loss of control—large amounts of food are consumed. Therapy concepts for obesity in combination with BED require the combination of elements from various intervention approaches and should include both concepts that address the treatment of the eating disorder and those that aim for weight loss. This chapter provides an overview of the therapeutic implications when a comorbid binge eating disorder is present with existing obesity.
