Diagnosis and Etiology of Obesity

  • Alfred Wirth

摘要

The aim of obesity diagnostics is to obtain information on body composition in terms of type and extent. The fat mass, fat-free mass (mainly muscle), visceral and subcutaneous fat, and ectopic fat (e.g., liver, muscle, heart) can be assessed. Diagnostics for clinical purposes are simple. The etiology of obesity is complex and multifaceted. In addition to genetic causes, energy intake, energy expenditure, eating disorders, sleep deprivation, diseases, and pharmaceuticals are important. Causes of obesity can provide indications for therapy, although treatment is usually based on the resources of the affected person and their social circumstances.
