Neuromodulation in Eating Disorders

  • Kathrin Schag

摘要

Neuromodulation represents an innovative approach for the treatment of eating disorders. So far, studies have primarily been conducted using non-invasive methods and less so with invasive methods. According to the available evidence, non-invasive methods have great potential in the treatment of eating disorders, particularly with regard to self-control abilities in eating behavior. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, as the brain area associated with cognitive control, has been the most extensively studied so far. The most consistent results have been found for so-called transcranial direct current stimulation. However, there is a lack of basic research and randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes and control conditions to develop standardized treatment protocols and to identify the specific factors and mechanisms of action.
