Data Collection and First Analysis Steps

The present chapter contains simple basic features of data collection as well as data compression. First, the drawing of samples (Sect. 6.1) and various methods of data classification (Sect. 6.2) are discussed. Subsequently, basic estimation methods for unknown parameters of a distribution (mean, variance, proportion) are presented in Sect. 6.3. The application of different estimators for the parameters mean and variance on the basis of available samples is presented in Sect. 6.4 and concludes with the comparison of different mean and variance estimators as well as the skewness of a measurement series.
