Introduction

This introductory chapter starts by motivating the basic terminology and notation of optimization problems using various examples. It then extensively addresses the question, under which conditions optimization problems can be solved at all and what types of unsolvability can occur. Finally, it provides some rules of calculus and transformations for optimization problems, which play a role in this textbook.
