In this chapter, we will explore the mechanical properties of beams and of long chains such as flexible polymers, as these structures are ubiquitous in cells. Moreover their mechanics are crucial for the functioning of cellular processes. We will start, in this first section, with presenting some examples where the mechanics of long chains or beams are of interest.
