Piercings are commonplace and cannot be ignored in our clinical routine. For the radiologist, the risk of infection and the long healing duration of 2–9 months associated with piercings are significant; the long healing duration is important insofar as the piercings, according to the manufacturer, should not be removed during this time. However, for imaging examinations, especially MRI, these pieces of jewelry should definitely be removed. In this conflict, piercings can be temporarily replaced by a plastic catheter. Typical locations for piercings are in the face: ears (including earrings), eyebrows, bridge of the nose, nostrils, nasal septum, lips, lip frenulum, tongue, cheeks. In addition, piercings are also worn as nipple (nipple piercing), navel and intimate jewelry, as well as at any other location on the skin.
