Dr. Malcolm Flemying sagte vor mehr als 250 Jahren „Corpulence, when in an extraordinary degree, may be reckoned as a disease, as it in some measure obstructs … heath, a tendency to shorten life, by paving the way to dangerous distempers“. Damit waren die Folgen von Adipositas mit Einschränkung der Lebensqualität, erhöhter Morbidität und Mortalität beschrieben.
