An ITS is an adaptive instructional system that incorporates both AI techniques and educational methods and is grounded in cognitive theories of learning and artificial intelligence. It includes a cognitive model of the students’ problem-solving steps. This cognitive model allows one to infer which step the student is currently working on and to provide hints on how to solve this step or to provide adaptive error feedback.
