Networking via an always-available internet connection and through sensors/actuators is transforming products and, consequently, production itself. These new products are the Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) introduced in Chap. 4. By providing new functionalities—primarily through software, smart sensor technology, and their networking—the functional potential is significantly increased. New business models are emerging based on the data generated by CPS.
