The knowledge economy has been subject to far-reaching transformations of national economies and societies. The term “knowledge economy” is used to describe “trends in advanced economies towards greater dependence on knowledge, information and high skill levels, and the increasing need for ready access to all of these by the business and public sectors” (OECD, 2005:28). The knowledge economy, which encompasses the period from the 1990s to the present (Hall, 2020), has witnessed a growing reliance on intellectual capabilities to drive economic growth while enhancing productivity (Powell & Snellman, 2004).
