As mentioned earlier, the tool whose generation and use in manufacturing is the subject of the following, is the laser beam. Its properties are important not only for the energy conversion at the workpiece, but also for the possibilities of shaping and guiding the beam on its way from the location of its generation to the workpiece. Since this is a key factor for the design of production systems, the propagation and characterization of laser beams is discussed first.
