As already seen above, the principle of permanent sovereignty over natural resources, as developed in the 1950s, is rooted in two main principles: the sovereignty of States and the right of people to self-determination. This combination reflected two contradictory tendencies, now united in one principle: economic development in the so-called developing countries and the international legal principle of self-determination, which includes the obligation to cooperate to advance independence in these countries.

As already seen above, the principle of permanent sovereignty over natural resources, as developed in the 1950s, is rooted in two main principles: the sovereignty of States and the right of people to self-determination. This combination reflected two contradictory tendencies, now united in one principle: economic development in the so-called developing countries and the international legal principle of self-determination, which includes the obligation to cooperate to advance independence in these countries.
