The following chapter examines Bourdieu’s contribution to communication studies. In his books “Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste” (1984) and “On Television and Journalism” (1998) Bourdieu addresses social inequalities in media use and the influence of power positions on journalistic production. Although overall he engages directly with communication issues only briefly, his concepts of field, habitus, and capital — central to his social theory — remain widely applied in communication research today. In the context of digital society, these concepts have proven particularly adaptable, especially in empirical studies of the Digital Divide.

摘要

The following chapter examines Bourdieu’s contribution to communication studies. In his books “Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste” (1984) and “On Television and Journalism” (1998) Bourdieu addresses social inequalities in media use and the influence of power positions on journalistic production. Although overall he engages directly with communication issues only briefly, his concepts of field, habitus, and capital — central to his social theory — remain widely applied in communication research today. In the context of digital society, these concepts have proven particularly adaptable, especially in empirical studies of the Digital Divide.
