This chapter describes a video-based lane detection system as used in driver assistance systems or autonomous vehicle systems (see, e.g., Fig. 17.1). A prominent example of such a driver assistance system is the lane keeping assistant, which warns the driver when the vehicle is about to leave its lane. For this purpose, the position of the vehicle within the lane is determined using a camera. If the distance between the vehicle and the lane marking decreases, the driver is warned.
