This chapter summarises the main findings on the influence of authoritarian regimes on the development of the public pension system in Bulgaria from the establishment of the Bulgarian Principality at the end of the 19th century to the fall of communism in 1989. The first part provides an overview of the key trends in pension policy and the major reforms introduced by the various authoritarian regimes. The second part discusses the main theoretical expectations and empirical findings.
