To understand and analyse the challenges and details of the set-up processes, various empirical studies were conducted in different companies in two European countries. The studies always focused on the activities of the setters and machine operators on the shop floor. Formally, set-up processes start after the production of one article and finish before the production of a second article starts (Van Goubergen & Van Landeghem, 2002).
