Why do people choose to live a pious way of life? The reasons are many and varied. This also became apparent in the interviews and conversations I conducted during my research. In this chapter I look at some of the individual paths in an exemplary way. Some of those have to do with marriage, others can be seen as a way out of a different way of life, a third group chose the way to a pious life in order to oppose the socialist doctrine they grew up with. Some walked the pious path for a long period, others changed their direction again after walking it for some time.
