As noted above, there were also conflicts over what should be displayed and focused on in the museum; as to which stories were important, and which aspects of the past were underrepresented. From an Authorised Heritage Discourse perspective this may seem comprehensive, but as has been noted, the interpretation of the past is always dependent on the available objects, skills, interpretations and emphases. This has been acknowledged by scholars as, according to George Herbert Mead, ‘there is no past, only versions of the past reconstructed and represented in the present’.
