Scholars have studied museums particularly in relation to the constitution and dissemination of knowledge, and thus the entanglements of knowledge and power. Both Foucault’s concept of governmentality (1975) and Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, capital and class distinction (1979) have been seminal in understanding museums as authoritative spaces of knowledge and show how power is enacted and maintained in and through museums. While the focus has been on class and class distinction, scholars are increasingly recognising the relationship between museums and exclusion in relation to ethnic minorities.

摘要

Scholars have studied museums particularly in relation to the constitution and dissemination of knowledge, and thus the entanglements of knowledge and power. Both Foucault’s concept of governmentality (1975) and Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, capital and class distinction (1979) have been seminal in understanding museums as authoritative spaces of knowledge and show how power is enacted and maintained in and through museums. While the focus has been on class and class distinction, scholars are increasingly recognising the relationship between museums and exclusion in relation to ethnic minorities.
