This study engaged with cross-cultural, variational and situational similarities and differences to add to the established discourse around politeness and indirectness. Overall, the first research hypothesis concerning the non-linearity of politeness in relation to directness is confirmed and the results mirror Blum-Kulka’s. Yet, the introduction of two additional, separate strategies provided a valuable nuance.
