This chapter outlines the refined design and research questions, and methodological framework of the dissertation. The study follows an exploratory sequential mixed methods design, combining a qualitative design research study with multiple design experiment cycles and a subsequent quantitative randomized controlled trial. The qualitative part integrates methodological elements from content-related design research and scaffolding analysis into a design research specification approach that allows the specification of generic design principles and the investigation of scaffolding effects of content-sensitive design features. The subsequent randomized controlled trial provides evidence for the efficacy of the developed instructional approach and tests hypotheses concerning the conditions under which the interactive video features support students’ learning.
