The Expansion of Students’ Field Excursions to Ghana into an Exchange Program: A SWOT Analysis of Universität Hamburg and University of Education, Winneba
摘要
The Diversity Contexts in Teacher Education (DiCoT) Project at Universität Hamburg (UHH) aims to enhance internationalization in teacher education through a structured exchange program with the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in Ghana. This study investigates the effectiveness of this initiative, focusing on the research question: What are the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) associated with the DiCoT exchange program? Using a SWOT analysis framework, the research identifies key findings from qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews with participants involved in the exchange. The study reveals several strengths, including increased cultural awareness among pre-service teachers, enhanced international exposure, and the establishment of a supportive buddy system that fosters cross-cultural relationships. Weaknesses identified include bureaucratic challenges and discrepancies in academic calendars between the two institutions. The opportunities presented by the program include avenues for guest lectureships and joint publications, while threats encompass potential funding instability and the risk of perpetuating unequal power dynamics in international educational exchanges. Overall, the findings suggest that, despite challenges, the DiCoT exchange program makes a significant contribution to developing transcultural sensibility and intercultural competence among participants, thereby enriching their educational experiences within diverse contexts.
