Developing Transnational Curricular Alliances Between a MA in Spanish Language Didactics and a Spanish for Heritage Speakers Course
摘要
This chapter describes a joint effort to develop and implement “International Encounters in Transnational Spaces (IETS)”: a blended (digital and face-to-face) program connecting pre- service Spanish language teachers from Hamburg (Germany) with a class of US Latinx bilinguals from Indiana (USA). Specifically, IETS was created to engage students from both groups into critical reflection and dialogue in ways that would stimulate critical consciousness, empowerment, and the cultivation of a linguistic and cultural-sustaining for personal and professional growth. To that end, a team of three educators from Hamburg Universität (UHH) and Indiana University, Indianapolis (IUI) collaborated to develop a transnational curricular alliance between an MA in Spanish language didactics and a Spanish class for heritage speakers (at the intermediate BA level). Drawing upon critical pedagogy principles, the team developed a module that aligned both curricula through readings, written assignments, and pair/group discussions. In this chapter we provide an overview of IETS, with a particular focus on the curricular collaboration and alignment, and turn to the students’ perspectives for insight, retrieved from e-portfolios they designed during the exchange, regarding their experiences taking part in this program. We close the chapter by reflecting on key challenges and important lessons learned.
