What does the New Brazilian Right Want with the State?

This article seeks to analyze some aspects of the recent rise of this Brazilian “new right”, starting with the election of Jair Bolsonaro to the Presidency of the Republic in 2018, and what this has meant in terms of the function of the state and its policies. The first part provides an overview of the understanding of what the term far right means and the scenario of Bolsonaro’s election. The second part briefly outlines the relevant ideologies and actors that support the neoliberal-conservative fundamentalist project of far-right groups. Subsequently, the new right’s concept of the state is outlined. The forth section scrutinezed some policies carried out during the Bolsonaro government that illustrate the ideologies, devices and interest groups.
