Stress is widespread in modern society, and while acute stress can be adaptive, chronic stress is linked to negative health outcomes such as cardiovascular and cognitive impairments. Burnout syndrome, a result of prolonged workplace stress, is strongly associated with these effects but remains poorly understood, especially regarding its physiological mechanisms. Research shows that men and women differ in both hormonal (cortisol) and neural responses to stress, suggesting sex-specific pathways in stress-related diseases. This study uses fMRI and the ScanSTRESS paradigm to investigate how individuals with burnout symptoms process stress, focusing on the amygdala and hippocampus. Findings may provide insights into sex differences in stress response and help tailor prevention and treatment of burnout more effectively.
