Grassroots ingenuity combines critical thinking and technological practice to investigate and address social injustices. For example, WoeLab developed 3D printers out of Western e-waste from Togolese landfills, data_labe involved the local communities of the favelas in digitally mapping their own neighborhoods to create transparency about basic sanitation in Brazil, and the Singapore-based Engineering Good refurbished over 10,000 laptops for children who would otherwise be left out of the digital classroom during the pandemic. However, these grassroots efforts have been historically mostly overlooked by academia.
