To synthesize the potential benefits of AM on VC, state-of-the-art AM applications on the complete vehicle level have been analyzed. Here, five approaches to additively manufactured vehicles are distinguishable: unique show cars (one-offs), individualizable vehicle concepts, low-requirement vehicles, high-performance vehicles, and generative concepts. Moreover, an overview of the conventional vehicle body design approaches already represented in state-of-the-art additively manufactured vehicle bodies has been elaborated. On this basis, twenty-two customer-focused DfAM technical application principles have been developed, showing that significant, conventionally not feasible, improvements in the four application areas, vehicle‘s energy conversion efficiency, package and comfort, individualization possibilities, and safety properties can be achieved.
