This chapter establishes the theoretical framework of the study by exploring key concepts of identity, stigma, and self-perception. Drawing on Erving Goffman’s theory of stigma, it examines how labeling and social recognition shape identity in Upper Silesia. Further, it discusses the evolution of national and linguistic identity through works by Danuta Berlińska and Wilhelm von Humboldt, highlighting the region’s multicultural dynamics. The final section addresses self-confidence and self-perception linking these ideas to teachers’ and educators’ professional and personal identities.
