The goal of modern foreign language teaching is to help learners develop native-like (grammatical) competence. Numerous factors can influence this process. While some teaching factors lie beyond the teacher’s control, others can be influenced and optimized to enhance the success of language acquisition. One such aspect is the presentation and conceptualization of grammar in textbooks and teaching materials. This paper aims to emphasize the need for a pedagogical grammar in and for teaching of Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian as a foreign language. After definition and terminological clarification of pedagogical grammar, the concept of pedagogical grammar will be exemplified by proposing a procedure for teaching past gerund form relaying on the previously acquired knowledge. This paper aims to contribute to the development of the didactics of Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian as foreign languages.
