A Story of Splits and Mergers. Political Parties and Elections in Romania, 1990 to 2025
摘要
This chapter provides an overview of the party system, elections, and major political events in Romania since 1989. It is characterized by a fragmented party landscape and a fragmented political elite. The extension of the presidential term from 4 to 5 years and the resulting difference in the dates of the parliamentary and presidential elections further increased the fragmentation of the party landscape and led to political crises. Frequent party changes, party formations, and a strong personalization of politics have become the norm. The chapter also analyzes the programmatic work, the ideological classification of the parties, and their European connections.
