The return of German citizens who have joined violent Islamist organizations abroad poses significant challenges for disengagement and deradicalization efforts. Based on qualitative interviews, this article aims to gain insight into the practical experiences of counseling organizations, returnee coordinators, and state police. The findings highlight the unique and complex nature of this target group, and identify the structures needed for effectively dealing with returnees. The contribution focuses on the multi-professional Returnees Coordination, a program specifically designed for these individuals. The Returnee Corrdination is responsible for coordinating and facilitating rehabilitative and reintegrative measures for returnees across the nation. It explores the challenges that arise from the intersection of different organizational cultures, procedural methods, and mandates of participating sectors. The article addresses the question as to whether coordination entities, currently active as the Returnee Coordination, can be applied to the entire target group and considered a viable solution to the challenges faced in the landscape of deradicalization and disengagement.
