The experience of recognition and belonging is fundamental to the development of a positive self-relationship. Sport and physical activity can provide children and adolescents with opportunities for beneficial experiences. However, this is only the case if they conform to the prevailing norms in this field, or if pedagogical and didactic measures are implemented to create a context that enables experiences of recognition and belonging for everyone. Against this background, and based on the current state of research, possibilities for designing sport and physical activity programs that promote recognition are discussed.
